Solo performer Dexter
Moore has got the nod of his peers and the business after an invitation only
performance at the CBD Hotel. His
first show in the Hunter was in support of RICK PRICE where he showed off his percussion,
slap bass and rhythmn guitar capabilities on the same acoustic guitar. Dexters' style
delves into the roots of blues, soul, funk and pop. He has released three CD's, two full
length albums,
SWINGS & ROUNDABOUTS and his latest release SOULO as well as an EP called ZOOM.
What's on in Noosa Feb
2001
Noosa based guitarist
and vocalist Dexter Moore has been somewhat busy. This week he appears in Sydney
supporting top Australian performer RICK PRICE, last week he returned from successful
shaows at the Tamworth Music Festival, and on Sunday he is back in town and will take the
stage at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club. Described as"Groove Meister", Dexter
Moore has supported some of the music world's top artists, including Dizzy Gillespie,
James Morrison, DIG, Renee Geyer, Crowded House, Diana Ah Naid, Wendy Mathews, and many
many more.
Such acclaim has also
seen Dexter receive invitations to appear at some of Australia's top festivals, including
the prestigious annual Frankston guitar festival in Victoria where he will return later
this year. Dexter's career has taken him to performances across the world - in Europe, the
South Pacific, New Zealand and throughout Australia. Dexter performed late in 2000 at
Jupiters casino on the Gold Coast, sharing the bill with Tommy Emmanuel and other top
Australian artists. His award-winning material and unique guitar-playing skills have
attracted the attention of international guitar makers 'Takamine', the result being an
endorsement by the company that will see Dexter provide many guitar clinics and live
shows.
At the recent
Queensland Sunnie awards, Dexter picked up a nomination for"Best Male Vocal". He
released his third album early in 2000, titled "SOULO - Music for time
travellers" Dexter also has won two Dolphin Awards (NSW) to his credit, one for 'Song
of the Year' - "Art of Love" from his EP "Zoom" - the other award,
Album of the Year, for his debut release "Swings & Roundabouts". His live
performances showcase acoustic music at it's best. Dexter Moore works his guitar through a
remarkable range of feels and styles. Combined with fantastic vocal skills, he produces a
sound rarely heard from one man and his guitar. Critics have described his shows as
"something different - something special", and his songs as having "that
elusive element...it's called soul".

DEXTER MOORE - SWINGS & ROUNDABOUTS
Coming out of the Byron Bay area, Dexter Moore has
produced an amazing bunch of 13 songs which stand out not only because of the quality of
the songwriting, but also because of the very slick production.
Five of the songs here were recorded live at
somewhere called The Bunkhouse in Byron Bay & it sounds like the crowd were very
appreciative, the pick of these being the very interesting lyrical content of "Mr
Music Deal", though "Citibluze" is also cool. Much of the music here has a
fairly high element of funk, though some of the slower songs have a more emotional blues
style.
Pick of the album here is "Altered
State", which moves the pace up a little, though "Passionflower" is pretty
cool & more in the slower end of Dexter's musical spectrum. Having already won an
award for this album, I think we'll be hearing a lot more from him in the very near
future.

LOCAL PROFILE as
written in PHAT Music Paper by Nick Snelling Issue #49 Jan 15 `98
When Dexter Moore plays the Railway
Bar in Byron , I always try to make it down for a couple of schooners . There's a lot of
hacks going around with an acoustic guitar and a few chords who call themselves a solo act
. But Dexter is something different , something special . His is the perfect music for the
lazy Sunday afternoon. for a start the guy really knows his instrument. Somehow he manages
to pluck, pop, and slap percussive sounds, basslines and shifting chordal patterns out of
the one solitary acoustic guitar.
It's really quite amazing to watch.
And all the time he`s singing these great smooth melodies over the top. Dexter Moore is a
one-of-a-kind-one -man-band. Indeed, he has that elusive element to his music, it's called
soul. As his rich warm tenor sifts through the moving bodies of the Railway Bar, feet tap
unconsciously, and fingers drum the faded table tops. Soul seeps through the
jazz-inflected rhythms, the upbeat funk and then bleeds gently from the quieter, more
introspective numbers. I have watched people close their eyes and get lost in the
sweetness of what Dexter Moore does, arpeggios tinkling over them like gold coins from a
purse. Others stare transfixed at the skillful blur of his hands over the guitar. It is no
wonder Dexter Moore has received international acclaim for his virtuosity both as a solo
artist and as a songwriter of rare depth.
Excluding these live performances,
Dexter's own independently released "Swings and Roundabouts" is the perfect
representation of what he does. Check the infectious refrains and hopeful sentiment of
"Love is Just Around The Corner". A touching and beautiful song, and the kind
you would expect to hear on a classic easy-listening radio station, except it's not a
classic. Well, not yet, anyway .

| Niche records Here is a most unusual and captivating CD ,
Dexter Moores debut "Swings and Roundabouts". Winner of NCEIA`s Dolphin Award
for Album of the Year `97 . It was also nominated for Best Male Vocal , Best New Recording
Talent , Best Jazz Song (Mr. Music Deal- A fiery attack on the music industry ) and Best
Folk Song ( Moving Breeze- a melancholic reverie ).
The first track "ZOOM" ,
an ' In your face ' groove , is also featured on the APRA Composer Exposer CD , and has
had a great deal of air play around the regional radio stations as well as Bondi FM .
Dexter plays nylon string acoustic guitar and the music is a dynamic blend of Soul , Funk
, & Blues . From lilting ballads to driving dance grooves , one man , one guitar and
13 songs will take you on a unique melodious , lyrical and rhythmical journey .
There are the studio tracks , all
first takes and recorded within 2 hours . Then there are the Live tracks with Dexters
musings adding a very personal touch to the CD . Dexter Moore has a definitive and soulful
voice , an innovative and percussive guitar style , and has collected together a range of
strong material , but what stands out mostly about this CD is the Spirit it encompasses
and emanates . This is what captures his audiences in Byron Bay and this is the essence of
what Dexter is saying with "Swings and Roundabouts" .

| Sunshine Coast Daily Music Critic
Andrew Tucker April '98 There's
been much fuss made in recent years over the MTV 'Unplugged' series of CD's. The reason
being that the format allows the artist to be heard in an intimate setting enabling them
to be as close as can be, face to face, with the listener - It's almost a one on one
experience. That's how Swings and Roundabouts is too - It's just like you are
sitting next to moore as he weaves his graceful passionate magic around his songs.
Moore is an experienced Australian-based professional
who has done the big gig trip and, not wanting to play the game, opts to go his own
independent way. The results are good to great original songs, superb guitar playing
varying from fast picked and strummed funk to beautiful acoustic melodies, and vocals that
cover the spectrum, from DIG half-spoken story telling to jazz folk funk singing in a
speedy John Martyn cum Terry Reed smoky yet punchy manner.
Moore is a one man band using 'just' acoustic guitar
to accompany himself( there's not even a beatbox and yet the album doesn't sound empty )
who is really impressive. If you are a singer-songwriter take a listen to this guy. He has
the goods and while he's not a blues artist he's on a par with local legend Carl Lynch.
